What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine and healing that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. In Sanskrit ‘ayur’ means life and ‘veda’ means science or knowledge, and so, Ayurveda is the science of life.

One of the central tenets in Ayurveda is that health is defined as a state of balance, tranquility, clarity, and contentment in the body, senses, mind, and spirit, and so, our endeavor is to find balance and equilibrium ideally to prevent disease and illness, or to circumvent it when it arises.
Each person is unique, and there is no single solution for all. One’s individual constitution and their environment must be taken into consideration to assess for imbalances and create solutions to correct them.
In Ayurveda we believe that all things are made of the five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. These elements combine to create the three main doshas: Kapha (Earth + Water), Pitta (Fire + Water), and Vata (Air + Ether). When one or more doshas is out of balance we use opposite qualities to bring it back into balance through lifestyle rituals and diet to promote proper digestion..

The approach to Ayurveda that is offered at The Soma Haus is steeped in feminine wisdom. This is your grandmother's grandmother's kitchen medicine — a softer approach that invites you in, embraces you, and creates lasting change through deep nourishment, restoration, and nurturance rather than restriction, rules, and intensity.
